I've heard a lot about Jason Isbell, both here and on other Bruce sites. He's clearly someone who's music seems to have a big cross over into the Bruce fanbase. I'm ashamed to say I'm completely ignorant to his music, aside from his BITUSA cover on Dead Man's Town. Where should a newbie start if I were to want to explore the catalogue?
I agree with avoiding the Ryman live album but the Live From Alabama record from 2012, that is gold. Early 400 Unit, no Sadler, just before the release of the magnificent Southeastern... Some definitive live versions of solo songs and DBT songs he wrote.
An interesting aside on Southeastern is that it came out around the same time as a solo album by DBT frontman Patterson Hood, Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance. I think that too, is a brilliant album but very different to Southeastern. It took me a while to get into Jason's album because I was so taken by Heat Lightning. But once I did... Far and away his magnum opus.
Watched it yesterday and yes it is good, but very emotional...I knew about most of his battles and what went on with The Drive By Truckers...love them and Jason hope they both tour again soon.....If you are a parent and can listen to Letting You Go without shedding a tear you have a heart of stone. If you have not seen it do yourself a favour and seek it out, try HBO if you are seeking it out.
If that’s not my album of the year I’ll eat my hat.
I have it on my Spotify, vinyl on order, but haven't had a chance to listed yet.
I’ll be giving it a spin tonight.
Just listened to his new album Weathervanes. I don’t believe there’s a better songwriter out there on current form.

I enjoyed it, but would have loved more screen time with Jimbo, Derry, Chad and Sadler.
It did make me go back and re-evaluate Reunions, though. And it is a great record.

It's good, really good.
On some levels it's a tough watch.
He's a complex guy.
Recorded it but still to find time to watch it...sometime this week hopefully.
