The 5lp box looks like an essential purchase. The last great Stones album?
40th anniversary remastered super deluxe 5lp boxset
includes 5 x 180g heavyweight vinyl. (lp1 brand new 2021 remaster of tattoo you, lp2 lost & found: 9 previously unreleased tracks, lp3, 4 & 5 still life: wembley stadium 1982) + 124 page book & lenticular artwork.
tattoo you celebrates 40 years with the release of a brand new deluxe remastered edition of the chart topping, multi platinum album. the super deluxe 5lp boxset includes the newly remastered version of tattoo you, lost & found, still life: wembley stadium 1982 and a 124 page book featuring over 200 rare photos from recording sessions & world tour + interviews with producer chris kimsey & photographer hubert kretzscmar. the package includes a special lenticular sleeve.
the lost & found disc contains no fewer than nine previously unreleased songs from the period of the album's original release, newly completed and enhanced with additional vocals and guitar by the band. among these, 'living in the heart of love' is a quintessential stones rock workout with all of the group on top form, complete with urgent guitar licks and fine piano detail.
other highlights of lost & found include a killer version of 'shame, shame, shame’, first recorded in 1963 by one of the band's blues heroes, jimmy reed; their reading of dobie gray's soul gem 'drift away'; and a fascinating reggae-tinged version of 'start me up’.
still life: wembley stadium 1982 is an unmissable memento of the band's london show in june of that year on the tattoo you tour. the mighty 26-track set is packed with stones mega-hits, including an opening 'under my thumb' and all-time greats such as 'let's spend the night together’, 'honky tonk women' and 'brown sugar’.
the wembley show has covers of the temptations' 'just my imagination,' eddie cochran's 'twenty flight rock,' the miracles' 'going to a go go' and early rock 'n' roller the big bopper's 'chantilly lace.' it also features early live workouts for tracks from the then-new tattoo you such as 'start me up’, 'neighbours’, 'little t&a' and 'hang fire’.
Ok, this morning I'm losing my mind over this. I'd never heard The Stones version of this before. Turn up the volume and wake up the neighbours... oh, baby, that's what I like.
No compression issues for anyone ? I listened to some samples of the unreleased songs and had a bit of ear fatigue .....although i'm never sure if its (just) my imagination ....But i dont think it is
So I just watched the Waiting On A Friend video for the first time in maybe 20 years and I can't help thinking that Jagger stole his whole thang from Don Knotts.
This is gold. I'm not a Stones out-takes junkie, so much of these are new to me. It's A Lie... awesome, classic Stones. Fiji Jim... brilliant. Their Drift Away I didn't like that much on first listen (sorry, Mick, there's a more sublime live version by this other dude I regularly listen to) but on second listen I'm liking it better.
I had a listen to the live show last night in the background while doing other stuff... sloppier show for mine than the Hampton 81 DVD I so love, with enough nuances in the performances that it's going to be worth revisiting in its own right without just sounding like a retread of Hampton.
As for the original album itself... leaving aside Start Me Up, it's an album with some other great banger earworms like Hang Fire, Neighbours, Tops. Which begs the question, why do I always end up hearing the more basic Slave in my head for hours after I listen to the record?
I went straight for the outtakes, as I usually do with this kind of release. Some good shit here. I'll save the live disc for tonight after I've heard the new Bruce archive.
Had a look at a physical vinyl copy today…….oh my! Must resist.
I don't have a vinyl player any more (despite having well over a hundred albums from the glory days sitting around still at home).
But if I'm reading it correctly, there is no CD option that includes the Wembley show?
Hopefully, that will end up on Spotify. I was pleasantly surprised when the live Brussels show ended up on streaming services from the Goats Head Soup special box set.
There are some days I wake up and just have to hear Start Me Up.
I should be about through exploring the massive All Things Must Pass set by the time this comes out.
