@MagicRatAFC Bit of a heads up required on your neck of the woods……
A mate is giving thought to relocating to the Inverness area: Inverness itself or one of the larger towns
close by: e.g. Nairn, Dingwall etc.
Any thoughts on pluses & minuses, areas/towns that are a no-no would be of interest. Currently no car so public transport and local facilities walkable/cycleable will have a bearing on any decision
Keep telling her the East Neuk is much nicer, bu to no avail. 🙄
Cheers
Cheers mate. Makes complete sense to me.
Bud, if she's not running a car, with what you've told me, she's living in Inverness itself.
Anything else is limiting travel wise.
There's a Vue multiplex in town (well outskirts, where I will be spending a fair bit of time in the next few weeks.......that's another story) and there's Eden Court Theatre which has a small cinema, not arthouse as such, but less multiplexy.
Having said that, I believe that Tilda Swinton is involved in curating a film festival in Nairn annually.
Again, better gym options in the town, ditto pool.
I do know a couple of lunatics that do open water swimming in various Lochs, including Loch Ness.
Decent library in town, and one of the best second hand bookstores anywhere.
There's not a massive live music scene in Inverness, Nils played the Eden Court a few years ago, as did Billy Bragg, Chuck Ragan played upstairs at Hootenannys (a decent boozer) again, a wee while ago.
But with the pen picture you paint, she's defo looking at Inverness itself or the immediate environs I'd say.
Thanks for the info. Female, mid-fifties, outgoing, bonkers green lefty, tt. Bruce, cinema, literature. Needs a swimming pool & gym within easy reach. Picture house & library in the toon a plus too. Decent broadband.
I’ve advised her you inevitably have to make some sort of compromise, and perhaps the compromise in this instance would be running a modest car but the lady’s having none of it: public transport, bike or walk. So having a stop on the mainline is pretty essential really.
Personally I think Perth is hard to beat up against the above criteria, but….…🤷♂️
OK, first up, what sort of age is he? Married, single.....and what's he into?
Secondly, relying on public transport up here is a crap shoot.
The towns you mentioned are both OK, I worked in Dingwall for many years.
There's a couple of ropey spots, and there's not much to do.
A smaller town near Dingwall, Muir of Ord is nice also......they're both typical small towns.
I don't know Nairn that well, but it's a decent place to live, if it's good enough for Tilda Swinton......
Nairn, Dingwall Muir of Ord are all on the main rail routes.
If you get me more specifics I'll assist further.
