I'm not a guy who's ever been really fit.
I'm a big fella, 6 4 or thereby, and I've always packed more than is necessary.
I do a bit of running but, normally, I'll hit the gym maybe three or four mornings a week.
I call my regime "running to stand still" because I eat ........ lots. I love my chuck and normally don't have a great diet.
But having a respectable exercise programme keeps me on the right side of morbid obesity.
Since Covid, the gym's off the table. I believe some gym's are now back in business but because my Missus falls into a "risk" category, I'm keeping away for the foreseeable.
So I'm now trying to up the ante running wise.
Also, the Missus has cut my carbs right down.......low and behold, I've lost 10-12 lbs in a month or so.
I'm still way overweight, but but I'm getting my 5-8k runs in easier and quicker (I count sub 6 minute ks as respectable).
How has everyone else's post Covid regimes panned out?
Just discovered Apple Fitness+. For anyone with an Apple Watch, the one month free trial is a no brainer, the classes are excellent.
Thank you both 😘
Still sober, 72 days. And happy!
So, even after the Festive excess I've managed to keep my new running regime ticking over.
But now we're getting icy and I'm struggling to get the miles in meaningfully, I'm managing to plod the distances but slippy underfoot means slow "pecking" steps.
My runs are a combination of road and grass and I normally wear road shoes.
A colleague of mine suggested that wearing trail shoes on slippery/icy roads helps, but I've tried that.
Any experienced runners have some advice/recommendations on footwear/training techniques etc. in the current climate?
10 1/2 k this morning.......I made damn sure work the Garmin saved it!
I share a bottle of wine with my husband with a proper dinner maybe 4-5 times a week. Before I go to bed, I then drink a huge cup of herbal tea, so I don't even feel drunk, not even tipsy. Maybe just a bit sentimental...
Anyhow.... Recently I keep waking up at 5 am thinking that I drink too much. But before the evening comes, I change my mind again, we cook something good, and I can' help myself... I know a glass of wine is the daily limit for women.
I never drink anything stronger, I never drink if I'm not eating (unless I'm at a party). We never drink more than a bottle.
And then there are the calories. I run every night to burn some calories so that I can eat my dinner and have some wine with my husband. I know drinking water would be healthier, but this evening ritual works for us. We talk to each other and listen to one another which I think is fundamental. The benefits outweigh. I hope.
I stopped drinking recently, because I knew it wasn’t doing me any favours. I was getting so unhealthy, my blood pressure was terrible, by body hurt all the time.
This drinking is nothing new — I’ve been doing it my entire adult life. Basically it was half a bottle of wine with dinner (husband had the other half), and then a couple drinks after dinner, maybe two strong gin and tonics, or a couple glasses of Cointreau - something like that. Anyhow, Halloween night was my last drink. It’s been 27 nights alcohol-free — which is probably the longest without alcohol in 25 years. It’s getting easier. Feeling pretty good about that.
So, today for the first time in....... probably north of five years, I covered 10k on my morning run 10.01 to be precise.
My trusty Garmin flashed "New record" as I finished but as I went to sync, something went pear shaped.
I had to do a hard reset.....it's fine now, but all record of my longest run since the other band toured is obliterated.
So the only evidence that it happened are my achy, stiffening legs.
I play tennis three times a week. The club closed down for 4 months so I started walking which I found boring, but at least I stayed active. Also bought some dumbbells and a bench which much to my surprise I’m still using. Tennis club has reopened, (not sure how long it will remain open though), so for now it’s tennis and weights for me. Try to avoid saturated fats and sugar as much as possible.
I know a guy who just gave up all sugar. After a year, he looks so healthy!
I got great results from cutting down drastically on refined sugar, flour, pasta and white rice. Instead I eat a lot of kidney beans and lentils. In a couple of weeks I lost serveral kilos of fat at the same time as I gained strenght and muscles. Now I have lesser problem with my asthma and low-grade inflammation in my body.
My Covid regime is pretty much the same as my normal regime. I do weight training 4 times a week at the gym and high intensive intervalls 2 times a week. In addition, I try to take longer outside walks as often as possible. I'm in my mid 50's. In my experience the older I get the harder I have to work to keep the physical decline off. My main Covid work out adjustement is that I go to the gym at 6 am instead of in the afternoon or evening to reduce the infection risk.
I lost weight two years ago when I realised I would have to up a dress size if I didn't. Started at Slimmers World and lost a stone and a half, which was fine.
I have never been much into exercise, I don't enjoy playing any sports as my coordination is so poor and I am not at all competitive!
I like walking and when the dog was younger we would walk for at least two, often three hours a day. As he has got older he is less keen and I have followed suit!
Living with a stick thin runner (same waist size as when I met him 50 years ago) can be a pain, as he can eat anything and never put on weight, but we did buy a treadmill at the start of lockdown in case he couldn't get to the track. I started off using the treadmill too, to walk fast uphill, no running. I let that slip too, but have started again this week. Also doing a Zoom dance thing, all Motown music, so I love that - my own private disco and it's quite a good workout!
So far, the stone and a half has not come back...
