God, that version from '88 is just terrific. I remember hearing that track on a bus after picking up the cassette in Pasadena. It was older and more mature sounding. The words so honest and open, his desire for her so strong. The adult world is there lurking. I was on my own for the 1st time. I can feel those days in my heart and mind. If only we knew then what we know now.
His first mature masterpiece. I was asked by a friend the other day what my favorite record is at this point after listening for 40 or so years, I said Tunnel of Love. It has a story and a line throughout. The lust and desire, then the fear and isolation. If there is a record that separates real fans from the pretenders, it's this one.
The whole fuckin' story. Life, the universe and everything. Or at least a lifetime together. Patti's sultry eyes in Tougher now the spiritual 'Force ghost' shimmering and whispering over Bruce's shoulder in the latter. Bruce's two best videos bookending the lifetime of a loving relationship.
I still remember when I saw the Stones in 1975, and they did You Can't Always Get What You Want. Cheers for the first few notes, bigger cheers for the first few words, biggest cheers for when he sang the title lyrics. Three levels of fans revealing themselves.
The first line recognition thing always sort of confuses me. Most songs, if you really know the song, are recognizable before the singing starts, unless it's some new arrangement or altered, extended intro.
No idea who Marlon Williams is ....But he sounds great
Is it any wonder I’m in (unrequited) love with Emily Barker?

Thanks for sharing, that's really good.
This would have to be one of the most covered Bruce songs wouldn't it?

For some reason I really liked the lack of hoots of recognition when she sang the first line. Very nice.
