I was dreading something like this when I saw him in Munich. He has aged considerably, and I'm sure I mentioned that he was straining to deliver. Not like in the old days, out of sheer exuberance, but because it cost him. He IS 74 - I know it slows you down. Some of his moves almost looked like caricatures of former times ("I'm doing this because you expect it") It made me sad. One more reason to think I'd seen him for the last time. 😪
When I've considered the minor gripes I've had about this tour - the initial lack of west coast dates, themost static setlist he's ever toured, the many great songs not featured - I've come to the conclusion that the problem is me, not the tour. If it were any other artist, out there in his 70s, playing three hours of some of the best songs ever written with one of the world's finest bands, no one would bitch. But it's Springsteen. He's given his all to us so many times, for so many years that maybe I've come to expct even more than his all. The truth is, after all this time on the train, what more could I possibly expect from Bruce Springsteen? He's given me more than enough.
Obviously, my first thoughts are for a speedy and full recovery to Bruce, whatever may be ailing him.
But I do admit I also felt for both yourself and @Buddhabone... after having nothing in your neck of the woods for the first leg, you finally had some Cali shows to look forward to.
Also a call out to one of our newest members @Storms who, from reading GL, was looking forward to her first actual show ever on the Canadian leg.
I've seen Bruce so many times and wasn't extremely fired-up for this tour, but was looking forward to seeing him in Phoenix with my daughter. That would have been special. Maybe he'll finish out the tour next year, as he's said.
Fuck. I wasn't going to share this because I thought it was too negative.... But it was on my mind constantly.
I went to the Vienna gig with my best friend, she is a nurse. At one point during the concert, she whispered into my ears: "Bruce is not healthy, his fingers are swollen."
I laughed and replied that playing the guitar was probably the reason...
I called her when the tour was postponed, she just said: "I told you he wasn't okay. It is his heart, not the ulcer."
Me: Bruce postponed the rest of the tour. It's expected to resume next year, but who knows?
Melody: Oh no. Are you still coming to Phoenix to see me, though?
Me: Yeah. Let's do it a week earlier, for Thanksgiving.
Melody: We can order Chinese food, get stoned and watch a concert video.
Me: Deal. Sorry about the show.
Melody: This will be better.
