I am no expert in the U.S. legal system, what little I do know of it I find third-world and horrific, but in my mind an allegation of this nature that starts life in the civil, rather than criminal, court suspicious.
I make no judgment on the veracity of the accusations. There are a number of legitimate reasons why someone would wait nearly 60 years to come forward.
Having said that, there is no fairness in coming forward with something like this and expect the accused to defend himself so many years later. I suspect nothing will be proved but the suspicion will linger forever.
I agree with you but I'm not so sure the suspicion will linger on unless the accuser can come up with pretty convincing detail and I doubt that'll happen in this particular case. Of course, if others come forward with convincing corroboration, then it's a different matter.
@riverdude4 legally, yes. In the eyes of the public opinion, I don’t think it will ever go away. It’s hard enough when there’s a proper, timely criminal trial. A civil trial so many years later…
Unfortunately, in the eyes of many, Dylan is already a child abuser. I don’t think this will ever go away.
@Tom Joad Unless other women come forward an accuse Bob of similiar crimes, painting a picture of it being a pattern, I think (like riverdude4) it will go away pretty fast and be forgotten. It's extremly unlikely somebody would commit a sex crime at the age of 24 and then have a clean record at the age of 80. Sex crimes is not exaxtly a once in a life time offence. I feel rather sure he didn't do it.
You do wonder.

......and she's chosen to seek pecuniary recompense via the civil courts rather than going to the cops.
If this is true it's horrible and Mr Zimmerman should suffer for it.
But the first steps make me a bit suss.
She's waited 56 years........
Oh no, that's the sort of headline I dread. Please let it be false.
