Sadly after a wonderfully brave six year fight with MND Doddie finally passed away yesterday.
If ever there was something which illustrated just how unfair life can be it was Doddie’s situation and far to soon death in his early 50’s
Doddie was a brave and funny family man who raised millions of pounds over the last six years, and even though you had never met him he was one of those people you felt you knew him anyway, and even though the end was inevitable I was just so sad and emotional when I heard the news last night.
I tried my best to sum up Doddie on here, but there are two much better tributes to Doddie you can read, one is on the BBB Sport website by Tom English and the other is really heartfelt tribute from his wife Kathy on behalf of the family on the official SRU website.
Thank you for being you Doddie, we will all miss you.
R.I.P
I only just noticed this thread, such sad news, but such an inspiring man.
I met Doddie many, many years ago in a ropey, broadly illegal, late night Dublin nightclub.
This was after the International that afternoon and Doddie meandered in with Gavin Hastings.
We got the craic with them for a bit but, inexplicably, they were more interested in chatting to the indigenous female population than a band of Scottish piss-heads.
(A friend of mine claims to this day that Doddie "cut his feet" in his efforts to woo a young lady.)
Anyway, Doddie came across as a loveable big radge, just as he always came across in the media ("mistaken identity" 🤣).
His inspiring fight against MND captured all our hearts, and he's gone too soon.
But with a helluva legacy at your back.
RIP big man,you gave that bastard of a disease a helluva fight, sadly, ultimately, it wasnae a straight game.
Just read it back and unsure how to edit, but of course it should read BBC Sport website.
