Listened to this again for the first time in quite a while, and for all its rehearsal-like quality and untuned guitar, something really magical happens with the performance in the last half. Quite unique.
I'm wondering if we'll understand the reason for these three songs after we've heard the album, or will we have to wait for what he'll have to say about it?
Those three make sense. I don't know what he is getting at or how they will sound. I will be honest that those three may be my favorite outtakes from all time. The boom box version of "Shooter" moves me unlike anything in the pantheon of his work. As I am listening to the Trenton version of "Orphans" I am moved like I always am when these kind of moments are immortalized in the Archive...
"Well the sons they search for fathers, but the fathers are all gone
And the lost souls search for saviours, but saviours don't last long
Those aimless questless renegade brats who live their lives in songs
They run the length of a candle, in a goodnight whisper they are gone...."
Feels like it fits with LTY in that we mourn our struggles in addition to reeling from the search.
"Well Janey's got a cop who lives round the block
and checks on her every night
From at through the jail outside her house his siren roars
when he knows that I'm inside
Well Janey's small and sometimes he scares her
So I held her real close she flowed like a ghost
And I told her bye, so long, I can't play that dope."
I always loved unreachable girls and can relate to it so much. I feel like he knows me, or at least we'd both chase the same ones..
"And now there's a light on yonder mountain
And it's calling me to shine
There's a girl by the water fountain
And she's asking to be mine
Jesus, he stands in the doorway
With his six-guns drawn, and ready to fan
He says, "You know, we need you in Dodge City"
Said, "But I'm already overdue in Cheyenne"
This one just began it all, there is so much in it's verses that hit home.
I'll be honest, I'm not 100% if I've ever listened to "Shooter" and "Priest" from start to finish before. And now I'm skeptical as to whether I should or simply wait until October 23rd.
I like the concept of revisiting old songs, maybe it will fire them up. I've never cared too much for Bruce's pre-Greetings songs. I find the them lyrically ambitious but plodding and heavy handed musically. That sums up Mary Queen also. But I look foreword to the new treatments.
I hope Bruce has gone for the solo piano version of Janey. The ESB would no doubt have done an excellent job, but if one were to go by the re-recording of None But The Brave, I don't think Bruce could improve on his own '79 performance, vocally or on the guitar.
My hope is the opposite. I want full band versions of "priest" and "Janey" with all the manpower of the E street Band behind Bruce. With "Orphans" I can't say I really have any expectations. Can't see how that one will fit into this album.
When I saw these three were on the new record I went hunting through the recesses of my collection and started making an outtakes play list on my phone.

I cannot wait to hear it all.
Thanks for the links to these. I don't think I have ever heard Orphans before.

LOT to choose from........
Had two of these for longer than I care to remember on this vinyl boot.
I agree re If I Was The Priest, really looking forward to hearing that one. Older Bruce voice may well suit the song even better.
